Curriculum
Intent
At St Barnabas, our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and a love of learning. We want every child to be so engaged in their day that they can’t wait to share their experiences at home.
Our intent is to:
-
Provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum which follows the National Curriculum and reflects our Christian values.
-
Give children a meaningful context for learning through engaging topics, themes and high-quality texts.
-
Nurture independence, resilience and problem-solving so that pupils are confident to face new challenges.
-
Promote respect for themselves, others and our community, underpinned by British values.
-
Enrich learning through memorable experiences such as educational visits, visitors, cultural opportunities and the active involvement of parents.
Implementation
-
Early Years: In Reception, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, building on nursery and pre-school experiences across the Prime and Specific Areas of learning. This provides a secure foundation for the transition into Year 1.
-
Key Stages 1 and 2: From Year 1, children follow the National Curriculum. Wherever possible, subjects are taught through cross-curricular topics to provide meaningful connections between learning areas.
-
Enrichment: We provide a wide range of opportunities including day and residential visits, visiting experts, cultural capital events, and opportunities for parents to share skills and support learning.
-
Approach to Learning: Teaching is interactive and child-centred. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, and reflect on themselves as learners. We place high importance on presentation and quality outcomes, ensuring children take pride in their work.
-
Personal Development: Alongside the academic curriculum, Religious Education and PSHE help children develop socially, emotionally and spiritually.
Impact
The impact of our curriculum can be seen in:
-
Enthusiastic, motivated children who enjoy learning and talk confidently about their experiences.
-
Pupils who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, both academically and personally.
-
High-quality outcomes in books and displays that demonstrate progress, pride and achievement.
-
Children who are independent, resilient and respectful, and who contribute positively to our school and wider community.
-
Learners who have had access to a wealth of experiences, broadening their horizons and helping them see themselves as part of a wider world.
