Personal Development
Personal Development at St Barnabas
At St Barnabas, personal development runs through everything we do. Alongside the Early Years curriculum and the National Curriculum, pupils take part in a wide range of experiences that enrich their learning and build character.
Through our core Christian values, we encourage pupils to value differences, to be resilient and reflective, and to show empathy and respect for others. Pupils also deepen their understanding of the British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, mutual respect, and tolerance.
Our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum teaches children how to stay safe, manage risks both online and offline, and build healthy relationships. We are clear that sexual harassment of any kind is not tolerated. In every aspect of school life, we prepare pupils to move confidently to the next stage in their education and in life.
Our Co-Curriculum
Specialist clubs – We offer a wide range of clubs from Reception to Year 6, run by skilled teachers and coaches. Choices include sport, art, music, computing, choir, science, Lego, cooking, and more – ensuring something for everyone.
Residential visits – In Years 5 and 6, pupils build independence and confidence through residential trips, learning in new settings and contexts.
Trips and visits – Each year group enjoys a variety of visits linked to their curriculum. We also welcome visiting speakers and workshops to bring learning to life.
Library resources – We work with a specialist library service to provide high-quality books and artefacts that inspire a love of reading and support subjects such as history and geography.
Assembly programme – Our assemblies focus on Christian values and pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. These include safeguarding, sports celebrations, music performances, Worship Warriors, and School Council debates.
PE and sport – Pupils take part in a wide range of sports clubs and competitions, from football and tag rugby to athletics and dance. We work closely with local secondary schools to extend opportunities.
Music – Every child in Years 3–6 learns a musical instrument. Our choir performs locally and nationally, including at the Devizes Eisteddfod and at the OVO in London. Pupils also perform regularly in assemblies and concerts.
Forest School – Our dedicated Forest School area enables Nursery, Reception, and nurture groups to learn outdoors, building confidence and teamwork through nature-based experiences.
Pupil leadership – Children are encouraged to be leaders. Roles include House Captains, Ambassadors, Eco and Worship Committee members, peer mediators, playground friends, and sports leaders
