Phonics - Read Write Inc
At our school, we believe every child can learn to read and write – and to enjoy reading for pleasure. No exceptions.
We use Read Write Inc. Phonics, a proven programme that teaches children to read accurately and fluently, with good comprehension. Children also learn to form letters, spell words correctly, and develop their ideas step by step in writing.
Intent
We want every child to learn to read quickly and confidently, developing a love of reading that stays with them for life. Through Read Write Inc. Phonics, all children are taught the skills to read accurately, fluently and with understanding, as well as to write clearly and with purpose.
Who is it for?
Read Write Inc. Phonics is designed for children aged five to seven who are learning to read and write. It is a rigorous and engaging programme that helps children become fluent, confident readers, enthusiastic speakers, and willing writers by the age of six or seven.
Implementation
Read Write Inc. Phonics is taught daily in small groups, carefully matched to children’s reading ability. Children are introduced to sounds systematically, practise blending to read words, and apply their skills through fully decodable books. Regular assessment ensures children are placed in the right group and make strong progress. Alongside reading, children are taught handwriting, spelling and composition step by step.
Reading
Through the programme, children learn the English alphabetic code. First, they are taught one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words. Later, they go on to learn alternative spellings for the same sounds.
From the very beginning, children experience success. The lively phonic books they read are carefully matched to their growing knowledge of sounds and ‘tricky’ words. As they re-read these stories, their fluency and confidence increase.
Each story includes an engaging introduction, prompts for discussion, and guidance on reading aloud with expression. This helps children develop not only the skills of reading but also the joy of reading with a storyteller’s voice.
