Savernake Class

Welcome to Savernake Class

Hello and a warm welcome to St Barnabas School, our school community and Savernake!

Savernake Class taught by Miss Clark on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Miss McInnes on Thursday and Friday.  On behalf of the Staff, Governors, children and parents, it gives us great pleasure to welcome you and your family to our school community.

Learning in Key Stage 2: Year 3 and Year 4

At St Barnabas we have developed our own unique curriculum, aligned to the National Curriculum, and we want all children to achieve in order to give them the best start to their school life.  Our ambitious curriculum is written with children at the centre; where they are encouraged to explore and develop effective learning skills for life as well as the knowledge to form the foundations for all future learning.

In Years 3 and 4 (Lower Key Stage 2), children build on the foundational skills learned in Key Stage 1, deepening their knowledge and understanding across all subjects. The curriculum becomes more challenging, with a greater emphasis on independent learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Children are introduced to more complex concepts in mathematics, English, science, and history, while also developing skills in areas such as resilience and self-management. The key difference between Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Lower Key Stage 2 (LKS2) is the increased expectations for cognitive development and the transition towards more structured, subject-specific learning. LKS2 students are also encouraged to take more responsibility for their own learning, making this stage an important step towards preparing them for when they move into Upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5 and Year 6).

Reading & Home Learning

Children should be reading five times a week at home to support their reading progression. This will also boost their self-esteem and love of reading. Please ensure that their reading is logged onto the Boom Reader app.

Times Table Rock Stars (TT Rock Stars) needs to be played at least once a week; playing the 'Studio' game will prepare them for the government Multiplication Tables Check that takes place in Term 6 of Year 4. If they find the timer stressful, play 'jamming'. 'Gig' to be played once a month.

Common Exception Words (CEW) will be tested near the end of Term 2, Term 4 and Term 6. It would be helpful for these to be practised at home in the Red home spellings book. Word lists are on dojo

Communication & permissions

Dojo Please make sure you are signed up to Dojo. If you are not yet signed up, please contact the school office. We use Dojo as a communication tool and digital portfolio that allows you to have a personalised window into your child’s time at school. The class teacher and your child can document any learning so that it can be shared, supported and celebrated. Any urgent messages you wish to tell the Class Teacher should be called in to the office, so it can be passed on promptly. Dojo is not monitored outside of school working hours.
Permissions Please ensure you have informed the Admin team if you do not wish your child to appear in photographs on our website, across Dojo or on our school social media pages.
Boom Reader

5 x reading logs a week to be added to the app, so it can be checked children are reading regularly.

Books can be changed when finished, if your child can tell the teacher when entering in the morning, that is the best time for them to have a browse of the library.

Arbor

This is where breakfast club, after school clubs, meals and school trips can be selected and paid for.
